A mixed-income and working-class residential area in the southeast part of Washington, D.C. is known as Fairlawn. United States of America. Good Hope Road SE, Naylor RoadSE, Pennsylvania Avenue SE (between Minnesota Avenue and Naintah City)), and Interstate 295 pass through it. The Anacostia River was home to the first inhabitants of Fairlawn, who were Nacotchtank Native Americans that lived and rode in the area. The region was first visited by Captain John Smith, who arrived in The river was named the "Nacotchtank" in 1612. War and disease devastated the Nacochtank, leading to the tribe's demise as a functional unit and the few remaining members merging with other local Piscataway tribes in the last quarter of the 17th century. Fairlawn was mostly a farm and woodland area until 1940. Housing and retail development was concentrated in Uniontown/Anacostia, Barry Farm, Congress Heights, and Randle Highlands. Until World War II, the communities were still separated by distance and most of the land between them was forested. Due to the severe housing shortage caused by the war and the influx of federal workers, Fairlawn saw the construction of thousands of homes and was later connected to other parts of southeast D. A. Fairlawn has two public schools, Anacostia Senior High School and Kramer Middle School. Naylor Road School, a private school for grades K to 8, is also located in the area. The District of Columbia Public Library's Anacostia Branch is situated in Fairlawn at 1800 Good Hope Road SE.
