Petworth is a residential area in Washington, D.C's Northwest quadrant. Petworth, a 205-acre country estate owned by John Tayloe III, who had Mount Airy and The Octagon House, was named after the ancient town of Petwich in West Sussex,
England. He partnered with Charles Carnan Ridgely of Hampton to establish the Washington Jockey Club, where he kept horses for races. His son Benjamin Ogle Tayloe inherited the property situated at the northeast corner of 7th Street Pike and Rock Creek Church Road. The developers bought Tayloe's heirs for $107,000 in 1887. The District surveyor registered "Petworth" as a subdivision on 98 acres in 1889, which included the former Tayloe estate and the Marshal Brown estate.
